FIGHTING FOR
Reggie has been a lifelong champion for civil rights and equality for all. He has fought for equal pay for equal work, authored legislation to advance racial justice, and been an ally and champion for the LGBTQ community. As the former Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, Reggie led the group’s work to advance racial justice legislation and improved state funding for programs and institutions like the California African American Museum (CAAM).
Working alongside his colleagues in the Latino, Asian & Pacific Islander, Jewish, Women’s and LGBTQ Caucuses, Reggie has protected and expanded civil rights for all Californians, inclding:

Earned a 100% lifetime score from Equality California.

Serves as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color.

Co-authored legislation condemning anti-Asian hate and supported a bill to require better hate crimes training for law enforcement officers.

Co-authored legislation that requires continuing education for medical professionals to include courses on implicit bias and bias-reduction towards communities of color.

Supported the 2020 constitutional amendment that restored voting rights for Californians on parole.

Co-authored the 2020 constitutional amendment to legalize affirmative action in California, eliminate discrimination in state contracts, hiring, and education, and advance justice and equity for women and communities of color.

Supported legislation in 2017 to create a Bill of Rights for LGBTQ seniors in long-term care facilities.
